Rhode Island law requires every person, before being awarded a state contract more than $150,000, must furnish a bond of that person to the state in a sum not less than 50% of the contract price. Previously, waiver of the bonding requirements was expressly prohibited. This bill allows the state to waive the bonding requirement for minority business enterprises or women owned businesses for a public works project up to $250,000. The original bonding requirements acted as a protection if the contractor can't complete the project.
